Wolverhampton
the centre of our world

“Where are you from?” is the question busy shoppers were asked in the Wulfrun Shopping Centre at the launch of a new helpline aimed at tackling racial harassment in the city.

Passers by were invited to make their mark on ‘Wolverhamton’s World Map’ in a bid to get them thinking about the city’s rich cultural diversity.  People study, work and socialise in the city got the chance to plot their journey to the city on a giant map that displayed Wolverhampton as the centre of the world!

City flags marked those had settled in the towns where they were born, and multi-coloured routes were plotted to mark the journeys, some short and others much longer that people had made to get to Wolverhampton.  From Dorset to Dovecotes, Poland to Penn and New Zealand to Newbridge, the final result symbolised Wolverhampton as a true international city.

Simeon Greene, Racial Harassment Co-ordinator for Wolverhampton said:  “By providing a listening ear with practical support 24 hours a day, we hope that the helpline will give people confidence to work through their options, or simply to talk about how they are feeling.” more
